This village community is located about 10 miles outside Nsuhum. It is accessible by a rutted dirt road, cratered by gullies and overgrown with elephant grass. In some areas, half the road has been washed away. A 20-minute bone-rattling ride took us to the village. The village was chosen as a site of a primary school to serve nearby villages because of its location and accessibility. As a result, it had grown into a community of more than 1,400.
A horde of school children, all clad in standard school uniforms ranging from ages 5 to 10 years old, had assembled outside their classrooms. They arrange themselves in neat lines, facing the school building, their hands clasped-as if to say prayers. I suspected that, they had assembled to sing the school anthem or some recitation to mark the end of the day. When I pulled away 4 youngsters and asked them to pose for a picture, the rest of the entire children stampeded to join them for the picture. Mobbed, I gave the camera to Mr. Owusu and they all rushed toward him.
